Lionsgate has set September 21st, 2012 as the North American release date for the movie reboot of the 2000 AD crimefighter Judge Dredd. The new movie, which will be called simply Dredd, was directed by Pete Travis from a script by 28 Days Later scribe Alex Garland. It stars Karl Urban (Bones in the Star Trek reboot) as the helmet-wearing futuristic lawman who is judge, jury, and executioner.
Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headley, and Wood Harris also act in the film, which was shot in South Africa. Judge Dredd creator John Wagner has expressed his approval of Garland’s script, which he pronounced, “is faithful to the original concept that made Judge Dredd a favorite bad-ass hero.” Unlike the 1995 film version starring Sylvester Stallone, Karl Urban reportedly plans to keep his helmet on in Dredd.
