The other shoe has dropped. Marvel announced today that it will begin publishing Star Wars comics when the Dark Horse Comics license ends at the end of 2014.
Executives of Marvel, Dark Horse, and Disney Publishing have released statements (see "Marvel, Dark Horse Statements on 'Star Wars'").
The move is an outgrowth of Marvel parent Disney’s $4 billion acquisition of Lucasfilm in October of 2012 (see "Will 'Star Wars' Comics Stay at Dark Horse?"). Disney will now have full control (and the profits from) the Star Wars comics as it embarks on a new series of Star Wars films. Director J.J. Abrams and veteran Star Wars scribe Lawrence Kasdan are currently working on the script for the first Disney Star Wars film, due out December 18, 2015 (see "R2-D2 Is in 'Star Wars VII'").
Dark Horse will continue its publishing program through the end of this year, and will also have a 90-day sell-off period to dispose of any remaining inventory into 2015, a company representative confirmed.
