Like death and taxes, variant covers it appears, will always be with us. The task is to keep making things interesting, hence DC Comics recent usage of monthly themes for its variants. So far the industry’s oldest comic book publisher has announced months with themed variants based on MAD, Robot Chicken, Steampunk, and Scribblenauts. With 2014 the 75th anniversary of Batman, it only makes sense to do a Dark Knight-themed variant month and DC Comics has announced just such an event for July where the Caped Crusader will adorn no fewer than 21 variant covers.
Jim Steranko is providing a striking moonlit rooftop battle scene for his variant for Detective Comics #33. Other artists who are providing Batman variants in July include Kevin Nowlan, Dan Jurgens, Walt Simonson, Klaus Janson, Graham Nolan, Cliff Chiang, Sean Murphy, Dave Johnson, and Mike Kaluta.
Titles that will receive Batman variants in July include Action Comics #33, Aquaman #33, Batgirl #33, Batman #33, Batman and Robin #33, Batman/Superman #13, Batwoman #33, Detective Comics #33, Earth 2 #25, Grayson #1, Green Lantern #33, Green Lantern Corps #33, Harley Quinn #8, Justice League #33, Justice League Dark #33, Justice League United #3, Superman #33, Superman/Wonder Woman #10, Teen Titans #1, The Flash #33, and Wonder Woman #33.
