According to today's edition of Variety, John Woo, the director of classic Hong Kong action films like Hard Boiled, The Killer, and Bullet in the Head, has been signed to develop a computer-animated film featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Woo, who has become one of Hollywood's top helmers with films like Broken Arrow, Face Off, and Mission Impossible 2, told Variety, 'I've always loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is one of the greatest action-adventure properties ever.'

Peter Laird, the co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, said that Woo's vision of the Turtles will take them back to their darker, edgier roots to the days when they had anchovies and onions on their pizzas, not just sausage.  The amphibian supergroup began in a black-and-white comic series that parodied popular superhero groups and then went on to a popular animated TV series and two more-or-less live action feature films.  So far the Turtles have racked up over $4 billion in sales of books and related merchandise.

The new, big-budget TMNT film that Woo is developing will be an independent production and is expected to be released in time for Christmas 2002.
