Gen Con CEO/Owner Adrian Swartout has released a letter sent to Indiana governor Mike Pence, urging him to withdraw support for a bill passed by both houses of the Indiana legislature that would allow discrimination against gay customers on religious grounds. Passage of the bill, she wrote, "will factor into our decision-making on hosting the convention in the state of Indiana in future years."
Swartout stressed the diverse nature of the show’s attendees. "Gen Con proudly welcomes a diverse attendee base, made up of different ethnicities, cultures, beliefs, sexual orientations, gender identities, abilities, and socio-economic backgrounds," she wrote. "We are happy to provide an environment that welcomes all, and the wide-ranging diversity of our attendees has become a key element to the success and growth of our convention."
Attendance at the show topped 56,000 last year, with an economic impact of over $50 million to Indianapolis.
Swartout indicated that the show would continue its run in Indianapolis through the term of its contract.
