Adam Wingard has been signed to direct Warner Bros.’ adaptation of Death Note, according to Hollywood Reporter.  Wingard has done mostly minor films, including cult horror hits The Guest and You’re Next, and is slated to be the director for Cinemax’ Outcast series, based on the Robert Kirkman comics (see “Cinemax Orders Full Season of Kirkman’s ‘Outcast’”).

Warners has had the Death Note feature, based on the first three manga volumes, in development since it acquired the rights in 2009 (see “Warners Gets ‘Death Note’”).  In 2011, Shane Black became attached to direct (see “’Death Note’ Gets a Director”), but that version of the project didn’t come together.

Jeremy Slater, who did a version of the Fantastic Four script (see “Michael B. Jordan Will Be Johnny Storm”) did the last draft of the Death Note screenplay, according to the report.
