Viewster, which announced a subscription box / streaming service in August (see “Viewster to Launch Subscription Box / Digital Service”), revealed its first comic content, the first few sub box themes, and some of the products that will be included at its New York Comic Con panel last week.

King Death
Two comics were announced, which will be made available digitally only to Omakase subscribers.  Both comics, by well-known webcomic creators, will be released in 24-page stories every other month: King Death, by Buttersafe creators Raynato Castro and Alex Culang; and Replay, by Ashley Davis (Amazing World of Gumball, Bravest Warriors, Jailbird).

Several of the first Omakase subscription box themes were also revealed.  The Alpha Box, already shipped to press and industry, featured vocaloid Hatsune Miku; the Beta Box, shipping in October to pre-launch winners, will be themed Back to School, and include out of print Mameshibas, a Love Live! noteboook, Azumanga Daioh button, and more.

As previously disclosed, the launch box will include an exclusive gold foil hardcover edition of the first volume of the Kill la Kill manga; and at the show it was revealed that the launch box will also include an exclusive Senketsu “eye” scarf.

An image showing a gold Naruto was also displayed as a hint at the theme of the January box.

The subscriber pays $29 plus $6 shipping and handling every other month for a bi-monthly subscription box with at least $60 retail value in contents plus ad-free access to the anime-heavy Viewster streaming service and exclusive Omakase content.

This unique real-world/streaming service hybrid had a big presence on the floor at New York Comic Con and represents a significant new entry into the subscription box business, which includes the category leader Loot Crate and numerous competitors (including a new one in the board game space, see “Board Games Join Subscription Box Trend”), in addition to over-the-top services from Marvel and Star Wars/Funko.
