James Tynion IV and Michael Walsh are co-creating a new horror series, Exquisite Corpses, alongside 10 different artists. An exquisite corpse is a group project in which each contributor adds to the work and then passes it along to the next. The 13-issue series, which Tynion says is the first of many arcs, will be constructed in a similar way. The story is set in a small town in Maine, which a group of wealthy families have chosen for their annual game, a battle royale in which 12 violent killers are dropped in the same area and must fight each other until only one is left. While the murderers go after each other, the townspeople just want to live through the night.
The artists for the project are Adam Gorham, Becca Carey, Che Grayson, Claire Roe, Gavin Fullerton, Jordie Bellaire, Marianna Ignazzi, Pornsak Pichetshote, Tyler Boss, and Valentine De Landro. The first issue will be released in May with variant covers by Alex Eckman-Lawn, Jae Lee & June Chung, James Stokoe, and Nimit Malavia.
"We’re trying to bring the kind of energy and excitement that’s usually reserved in the comics space for a superhero comic or licensed property," Tynion said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "That’s why we’re calling this a horror comics event. We feel like this has the potential to be something really special and lasting."
Tynion also plans a year-long tour, dubbed the Corpse Tour, with stops timed to coincide with the release of each issue. At each stop, Tynion will have a conversation with local Exquisite Corpses creators, followed by a question-and-answer session and a signing. The tour will begin in May.
"During the Exquisite Corpses writers summit in Buffalo last year, I was struck by how charming the creators were with one another, and how much knowledge they had to share," said Jazzlyn Stone, Director of Communications for Tiny Onion. "Constructing this series has felt like a celebration at every step—we would like to invite more people to this Exquisite Party. Corpse Tour '25 is designed to share some of that writers room magic with the fans and retailers, to bring the party to their door."
Tynion is the writer of the best-selling Something Is Killing the Children, and Walsh is the co-creator of the Image Comics horror anthology series The Silver Coin and writer of Universal Monsters: Frankenstein (see "Eisner Winner Takes on Frankenstein").
