IDW Games has revealed details about its upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past board game, expected to release in July. The project is being funded through Kickstarter.
Originally announced last summer (see “Kevin Eastman, Kevin Wilson Team Up on ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Board Game”), the scenario-based board game was created by veteran designer Kevin Wilson (Descent, Arkham Horror) and features the iconic TMNTs facing off against some of their most notorious enemies, represented in the game by plastic miniatures. The scenarios are designed to tell a continuing story, with the characters developing and improving from game to game. The scenarios are designed for 2 - 5 players, and take about 60 to 90 minutes to play.
The game system is overlord style, and is based on custom action and combat dice as well as a deck of game cards. The hero players can act cooperatively, sharing the results of some of their dice with other characters. The villain player, meanwhile, constructs a deck of action cards based on the characters under their control. The project is being funded through a Kickstarter campaign, with final components being determined by the campaign’s stretch goals. The game will include at least 34 plastic miniatures, 23 custom dice, 119 cards, 13 character sheets, 12 map tiles, and 144 tokens, as well as four adventure comics and game rules. The Kickstarter campaign does offer a retailer-only backer package, which includes six copies of the game.
