The story is a mix of murder mystery, family drama, and historic epic set in the late 1960s in Chicago.  The graphic diary is told from the perspective of young Karen Reyes, who has an obsession with horror films.  She begins to look into the mysterious death of her upstairs neighbor Anka Silverberg.  In her snooping, she learns the interconnect stories of the building’s other residents, and discovers clues that link Anka’s life to Nazi Germany.
