New York Comic Con News:  Today Dynamite Entertainment has announced agreements with CBS Entertainment Products that will allow the publisher to launch new comic book series for the 1990s cult hit TV series Charmed, and for the vintage Saturday morning cartoon character Mighty Mouse.  No details have been released on the two new comic book series from Dynamite yet, except for the fact that both the Charmed and Mighty Mouse comic book series will debut in 2017.

Charmed debuted in 1998 and this Aaron Spelling-produced saga of three sisters, who happen to be the most powerful “good witches” of all time, lasted for nine seasons and amassed a devoted following, who watched the San Francisco-based Halliwell sisters protect the innocent from underworld demons.  Zenescope Comics continued the supernatural narrative of charmed through Season 9 in 2012 and Season 10 in 2014 (see “Charmed Comics Return”).

Mighty Mouse, the anthropomorphic super-powered rodent, was created by Paul Terry’s Terrytoons in 1942, and like Bugs Bunny became a regular in theaters in short cartoons that were later shown on TV in the 1950s and 1960s.  The animated Mighty Mouse was briefly revived by Filmation in the 1970s and Ralph Baksi in the 1980s, although a planned revival by Paramount in 2002 came to naught (see “Mighty Mouse to Save the Day Again”).

Mighty Mouse had a major presence in comic books from the 1940s to the 1970s thanks to Terrytoon comics, which were published by Marvel parent Timely in the 1940s, after which the rodent superhero went on to appear in Pines Comics, St. John’s Publications, Dell and Gold Key, as well as a two issue, small press black & white, magazine size Mighty Mouse in 1987 from Spotlight Comics, and in a full color run from Marvel in 1990-91.

Dynamite’s new Mighty Mouse comic, which will help celebrate the character’s 75th Anniversary in 2017, will be the first new Mighty Mouse comic book adventures in more than 30 years.
