Saban Brands Power Rangers franchise had two big character reveals today, one for the BOOM! Studios comic and one for the Lionsgate theatrical film.
{SPOILER ALERT} In BOOM! Studios’ Might Morphin Power Rangers #9, released today, a mysterious new Power Ranger made his debut. This is the first time a new Power Ranger has been created for the “Mighty Morphin” continuity since the series debuted 23 years ago. This new Ranger has been the mastermind behind all the chaos the Power Rangers have faced in the comic series so far. His appearance is part of a long-term story for the comic.
The new Ranger was developed by series writer Kyle Higgins, cover artist Jamal Campbell, Saban Brands and BOOM! Studios. The identity of the mysterious Ranger will be revealed in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11 releasing in January. The Ranger’s origin will be revealed in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #12 in February
Lionsgate Power Rangers movie revealed the concept art for Alpha 5, the robotic assistant of Zordon and the Power Rangers, via IGN. Bill Hader (SNL, Inside Out) will be providing the character’s voice for the movie. Hader also was a vocal consultant for robot BB-8 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film’s Twitter account was recently hijacked by villainess Rita Repulsa (see “'Power Rangers,' 'Pacific Rim 2,' 'Hard Boiled,' 'Highlander,' 'Smurfs'”). The film arrives in theaters on March 24.
