Tony Cade of The Dragon's Horde in Stone Mountain, Georgia read Kendall Swafford's recent column (see "Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk--Three Sides To Every Story") and would like to comment on the subject of displaying new weekly comics.
Kendall Swafford wrote: "Some stores don't segregate the new stuff every week, preferring to spread this week's wealth around the store, in whatever spot they deem appropriate. This does the regular a disservice, as they have to hunt for everything that might be new, just to find what came out this week."
I enjoyed reading Kendall Swafford's column very much, but I wanted to get a discussion started on the "New Book "section. In my store I tag the new books that have come in for the week. My comics are in sections grouped by publisher and related titles. I observed that a new book section cost me sales, customers would go to the new weeks books then straight to the register. Basically, if the book was out of sight, it was out of mind.
A lot of customers may not have enough money for all the books they want on a certain week and say they will pick it up next week. But the book will be out of their tunnel vision the next week. I have also had the good fortune many times of someone noticing and trying a title because they had to take the time to look to find a particular comic.
What have you guys experienced and what are your opinions?
