Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World probably moved more books at  pop culture stores than any other film of 2001.  The film spurred sales of the Dan Clowes graphic novel on which it is based to over 70,000 -- making it Fantagraphics' best-selling title ever (see 'Ghost World Sales Still Going Strong').  Steve Buscemi has already been nominated for several awards for his performance in Ghost World -- and Academy Award nominations for this film are not out of the question.  With its low key realism, wry humor, and bittersweet storyline Ghost World may turn out to be one of the most influential films of the past year.  The release of the DVD provides retailers with one more chance to profit from this extraordinary property by displaying the graphic novel and original screenplay along with the disk (and perhaps some Eightball trades).

The Ghost World DVD, which retails for $26.98, boasts a number of extras including a 'Making of Ghost World' featurette with interviews from the cast and crew as well as a rare Indian music video from Gumnaam, circa 1965, showcasing the music of Mohammed Rafi's 'Jaan Pehechaan Ho.'  Equally interesting are a number of deleted scenes and alternate takes that Ghost World fans are sure to find intriguing.

Retailers are urged to concentrate their efforts on the DVD rather than on the VHS version of Ghost World.  Not only does the VHS lack the extras available on the DVD, it is priced at $32 (see 'Ghost World DVD').  The higher price of the VHS tape reflects MGM's belief that VHS is primarily a rental medium, while DVD is a collector's medium.
