The PG-rated family comedy The Gameplan took the top spot at the box office with an estimated $22.7 million, easily outdistancing the R-rated action film The Kingdom, which earned an estimated $17.7 million.

Meanwhile Resident Evil Extinction fell to number three as its box office take declined by 66.2% to an estimated $8 million.  Although it has nearly $37 million in the till so far, Resident Evil Extinction will have a hard time besting its predecessor, Resident Evil Apocalypse, which accumulated a domestic gross of $51.2 million in 2004.

The precipitous fall that Resident Evil Extinction took in its second weekend is an all too common occurrence for horror films.  The Steven King-based chiller, 1408, which featured a subtler, more inclusive approach to the horror genre, managed to avoid the second weekend knockout.  It should be interested to see if 30 Days of Night with its high concept take on the shopworn vampire genre will be able to attract a wider audience than just the teenage horror film crowd.

The Korean special effects blockbuster Dragon Wars (the highest budgeted film in the history of Korean cinema) dropped nearly 60% in its third weekend, earning just a million dollars and bringing its cumulative to just over $10 million.
