Brave Story, a novel published in 2007 by Viz (see 'Brave Story, Letters, Naruto'), has been awarded the Batchelder Award by the Association for Library Service to Children at the recently concluded American Library Association Mid-winter Meeting.  The Batchelder Award is given the most outstanding childrens book of the year that originated in a different language. 

The Brave Story novel, by Miyabe Miyuki, has spawned a long-running manga series and an anime feature.
