Mattel, the nation’s leading toy company, has announced that it is developing a new line of toys based on the world’s favorite poltergeist-fighting team, the Ghostbusters. The new toy range will be targeted at collectors (note where the toys are debuting) and will kick of this June with the release of line of 12-inch figures just in time for the 25th anniversary of the original Ghostbusters movie. The 12-inch figures, prototypes of which will be on display at the New York Comic Con, will only be available online directly from Mattel, but a line of six-inch Ghostbusters Action Figures sculpted by the Four Horsemen, which will debut at the San Diego Comic Con, will be widely available. Mattel also announced that it will be creating figures based on The Real Ghostbusters animated series.
The Ghostbusters property is currently undergoing something of a rebirth. A new video game, created by the writers of the original movie, came out last year, and Tokyopop is publishing a Ghostbusters manga (see “Tokyopop Calls Ghostbusters”). Potentially even more exciting is the fact that a new Ghostbusters movie is in the works (see “New Ghostbusters Film”).
