Mattel has announced that it has secured the master toy license for 20th Century Fox’s and James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi flick Avatar (see “Avatar Bumped to December”). The toy line will include action figures based on characters, creatures, and vehicles from the movie. Each toy will include a 3-D Web tag, which the owner can scan into his or her computer to unlock additional content, such as biographical information, online.

Avatar (not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan’s Avatar based on the Nickelodeon cartoon, see “The Last Airbender Release Set”) stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, with effects by WETA Digital.  It’s on target for a December 2009 release. The toys will come out in October, in advance of the movie.
