Henry Segovia of Lobo Anime & Comics in Albuquerque, New Mexico shares his store's successful Free Comic Book Day experience:
Lobo Anime & Comics had a spectacular FCBD event! After seven years in an 800 square foot shop, the store made the move last November to our new 2,400 square foot location at 1016 Juan Tabo Blvd. in Albuquerque. We've been having FCBD since the beginning and always had a great turn out, but never had the room to do very much. With so much more space, it was decided that a huge event was in order to celebrate the day!
We started by inviting other vendors and business's to participate in a sidewalk sale and hot dogs and Cokes were sold for fifty cents each. Local artists where also invited to show their work and do sketches. The 7000 BC crew, a local artist group even handed out their own free comic! The local SW 501st has always supported us and have been there to help promote the event every year. Because of their constant support and example it was decided that a costume contest would be added with one grand prize for the best costume. We thought a hand full of people would take the time to get into costume. The local fans proved us wrong! There were so many fantastic costumes that we had to add second and third place prizes! We were also lucky enough to get Mike and Khrisitne Esch to bring down and display their replica Batmobile from the 1960's TV show. We almost doubled our free comics giveaway order from last year and still ran out by mid afternoon! All in all it was a very enjoyable day for us and we thank all who took the time to stop by.
