Dave Williams of Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, Delaware sent in this Free Comic Book Day report:

What did the hundreds of children like best about Free Comic Book Day?  "The comics!"

On Saturday, May 2nd more than 1,300 visitors celebrated Free Comic Book Day at Captain Blue Hen Comics in Newark, Delaware and went home with smiles and thousands of comic books.  It was a day of fun for local families who came for free comics, but stayed for live entertainment, food, and art classes.

Eight guest artists (Franco, Rich Faber, Mike Devito, Charles Paul Wilson, Scott Neely, Buz Hasson, Ken Haeser, and Jamar Nicholas) signed comics, sketched, and hosted drawing classes.  Costumed heroes and villains (including the Chik-Fil-A Cow) mingled with the crowd. Members of the neighboring Shao Lin Tiger & Crane Kung Fu Academy performed the Lion Dance.

It was also a day for giving.  Captain Blue Hen accepted cash and food donations towards in exchange for extra free comics.  Everyone got a free comic book for attending with more comics as the incentive to give. Generous donors gave hundreds of dollars to funds for a local library and a non-profit for the arts.  They also gave mounds of food to the local food bank.

Why do the guest artists and costumed characters and volunteers sign up year after year to put on this free event for the public?
