Warner Bros. obviously has first dibs on the film adaptations of comics published by its sister company DC Comics, but occasionally, as was the case with Warren Ellis’ Red, which was made into a highly successful movie by Summit Entertainment, one gets away.  That would appear to be the case once again with The Mighty, a DC series written by Peter J. Tomasi (Green Lantern Corps) and Keith Champagne, and illustrated by Peter Snejbjerg that debuted in 2009, but actually it’s a bit of a different scenario.  The Mighty is a “creator-owned” project, so unlike the case with Red, where Warners had a chance to nab it, but passed, The Mighty was open for bidding, and Paramount, which is becoming quite aggressive lately (see “Penny Arcade’s The New Kid Optioned”), snapped it up according to Deadline.

Will The Mighty make it to the big screen?  Well so far no directors or screenwriters have been assigned, but it does provide an interesting take on the superhero genre.  The protagonist of The Mighty is Gabe Cole, a tough cop.  When he was a kid, Cole’s life was saved by the superhero Alpha-One, but years later Cole discovers that the world’s most powerful super-being has dark designs that he must attempt to thwart, and so begins a desperate and unequal struggle.
