Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell plan to remake their 1981 classic Evil Dead with original producer Rob Tapert, who has also signed on for the project. Raimi, Campbell, and Tapert were all students (or ex-students) at Michigan State when they hatched the idea of a relentless grindhouse horror movie based loosely on H.P. Lovecraft’s Necronomicon.

This time the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be co-written and directed by Fede Alvarez, the South American filmmaker behind “Ataque de Panico” (“Panic Attack”), a 2009 Uruguayan science fiction short film about giant robots attacking the city of Montevideo that became a You Tube sensation.

The Evil Dead movies have developed a huge following and spun-off lots of comics (including several series from Dynamite) and other merchandise.  It is not known at this time if Ash, the chainsaw-wielding zombie killer played by Campbell, will be a part of the Evil Dead remake.
