In spite of the fact that the sequel to J.J. Abrams’ franchise restoring 2009 Star Trek film remains unscheduled, the property appears to be undergoing something of a revival as can be seen by the number of new  Star Trek items that will be on display at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
 
Abrams will be displaying its Star Trek Vault: 40 Years From the Archives (MSRP $40.00), a deluxe 128-page hardcover history of the franchise that covers the entire history of all six TV series and ten original feature films with 350 images including 13 interactive reproductions of some of the most fascinating memorabilia from the CBS archives.  The Star Trek Vault will be released in October.
 
Meanwhile Chronicle Books is readying Obsessed With Star Trek (MSRP $29.95) for a September release.  More than just a trivia book, this is an interactive game with an electronic scoring module that allows readers to quiz themselves or compete with friends to answer over 2,500 questions covering all the various Star Trek TV series and movies.
 
IDW Publishing has unveiled its new comic based on the 2009 J.J. Abrams’ movie (see “Star Trek Comics Return With New Crew”) and will show off a new Star Trek: The Next Generation comic book title at Comic-Con, where Lightspeed Fine Arts will be display new lithographs featuring five Captains from the Star Trek TV series.
 
For young readers there is the Star Trek: Book of Opposites (Quirk Books, $9.95) and the first three volumes of the Starfleet Academy series, which Simon and Schuster is bringing back after they have been out of print for years.
 
In August WizKids is introducing its Star Fleet Captains, a strategic miniatures combat game with 24 highly detailed starship miniatures and an ingenious gameplay system based on WizKids patented Clix dials (see “Star Fleet Captains”).

Meanwhile Bandai is introducing a “Jean Luc Picard” trading card as well its Star Trek Deck-Building Game based on Star Trek: The Next Generation (see “Star Trek Deck-Building Game” and “More on the Star Trek DBG”).  The 300-card Star Trek Deck-Building Game (MSRP $39.99) is extremely versatile offering three different modes of play.
 
At Comic-Con Diamond Comic Distributors will be showing off PPW’s Star Trek Mr. Potato Heads, which will feature characters from the original series, while Hallmark will preview its 2012 designs of Star Trek-themed holiday ornaments and greeting cards.
 
At the other end of the toy price spectrum Quantum Mechanix will display new replicas including the Enterprise Artisan Replica, Kirk Animated Maquette, Enterprise “refit” Artisan Replica and highly detailed Phaser Replicas.
