Warner Bros. is interested in acquiring the rights to Christian Gossett’s The Red Star, an alternate history science fiction saga set in the Soviet Union, which was optioned by Universal for Russian Director Timur Bekmambetov back in 2006 (see “The Red Star Optioned”). Universal eventually passed on the project, which went into “turnaround” (like the recently nixed ambitious adaptation of The Dark Tower, see “Universal Abandons The Dark Tower”). Although it’s in the very early stages, The Red Star may yet prove to be another rare example of a project finding new “life” after “turnaround.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is interested in acquiring the sci-fi fantasy series for producers Neil Moritz (Fast Five) and Jason Netter (Wanted) whose “comic-centric” Kickstart Productions is developing adaptations of Garth Ennis’ Preacher at Columbia with D.J. Caruso set to direct, and The Boys another Garth Ennis comic series, which is published by Dynamite Entertainment.
