ICv2 has confirmed that Marvel is planning to raise the cover price of 13 of its titles from $2.25 to $2.99 starting with titles shipping in April. All three of the titles included in Marvel's 'U-Decide' competition--Captain Marvel, Marville, and Ultimate Adventures--will receive the higher cover price, along with Agent X, Black Panther, Exiles, Iron Man, Soldier X, Thor, Spider-Girl, Thunderbolts, Weapon X and X-Statix.
Ironically the entire 'U-Decide' campaign arose from an earlier attempt by Marvel to raise the cover price on three of its lowest-selling titles by twenty-five cents (see 'Low-End Marvels Get Price Boost'). Captain Marvel scribe Peter David offered to lower his compensation in exchange for Marvel holding the line on the cover price, and the resulting 'discussion' resulted in the three-way smackdown between David's Captain Marvel, the Jemas-written Marville, and Joe Quesada's Ultimate Adventures. The result of U-Decide appears to be that prices are going up on all three books.
All 13 of the titles designated for a price hike are currently selling fewer than 50,000 copies per issue and the alternative to the price hike appears to be cancellation.
