The massive success of The Hunger Games, which has now earned over $460 million worldwide, has created a delay for the sequel to another film, X-Men: First Class, whose success was several orders of magnitude smaller. The “problem” is Jennifer Lawrence who stars in The Hunger Games as Katnis Everdeen, but who also played a key role as the sexy, shape-shifting Mystique in Matthew Vaughan’s X-Men: First Class.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fox was planning to begin shooting the X-Men: First Class sequel in the fall, but the studio will now delay the start of photography on the young X-Men sequel until January of 2013, so that Lawrence can reprise her role of Katnis Everdeen in Catching Fire, the second film in The Hunger Games franchise. Although early reports had writer/director Gary Ross of The Hunger Games leaving the franchise after one film, it now appears that he may be back to helm Catching Fire.
