HBO has commissioned the Austin, Texas-based collectible art studio Mundo to create posters based on the pay cab net’s Game of Thrones, the hugely-popular adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel. The limited edition, screen-printed posters will be available at Comic-Con this week. The three posters by artists Martin Ansin, Vania Zouravliov, and Daniel Danger take wildly different approaches to creating a collectible based on the popular series that has proven to be a major sales-driver for both games and comics. Ansin’s stark black-and-white image features likenesses of the show’s major characters, both human and animal.
On the other hand Daniel Danger’s design uses color very evocatively in his recreation of a scene from the show’s first episode that shows a white witch closing in on the Night Watch rangers. Danger’s design is basically a cinematic longshot that takes full advantage of the primeval forest that provides the setting for many of the show’s most interesting moments.
The third poster in this series, which debuted online at EW, is easily the most "surreal" of the lot. Zouravliov’s image is a Giger-esque amalgam of the organic and inorganic, a surrealist escutcheon unified by some very innovative typography.
