Dark Horse Digital announced today that it was adding Dynamite Entertainment titles to its offerings, in a pivot from being the company digital comics store for Dark Horse to being a retailer of digital content, including content from other publishers. The program starts with 18 Dynamite collections and 38 individual issues, and more to be added. Upcoming Dynamite releases will be available day and date on Dark Horse Digital.
Dynamite Entertainment is a good fit for Dark Horse, as it has an extensive line of licensed comics that mesh well with Dark Horse's broad range of media-based properties.
The Dark Horse family of companies has extensive retail operations, of course, including a Portland, Oregon-based chain of brick and mortar stores and the Things from another World (TFAW) online store. Both of those operations carry a complete line of titles from all comic publishers.
It remains to be seen whether Dark Horse will continue this move into digital retailing and perhaps align its digital retailing more closely with the TFAW brand.
And in a tweak to Marvel and comiXology, Dark Horse offered its own #1 promotion in honor of the second anniversary of Dark Horse Digital, giving consumers 50 Dark Horse #1s free in a limited time promotion. The Marvel promotion on which this is modeled offered 700 Marvel #1s free for a limited time, buckling comiXology’s servers in its first iteration after the announcement at SXSW (see "Marvel's SXSW Promotion").
