Comic-Con News: On the eve of the San Diego Comic-Con during which Neil Gaiman will be honored, DC Comics released Dave McKean’s stunning cover to Sandman: Overture #1. With its collage effects and logo remix it is clear that this is the work of the same artist who pioneered this mixed media style with the daring cover for Sandman #1 back in 1988. But there is an assurance and maturity about this latest effort that makes it especially compelling. As Gaiman put it after seeing the design, "There is something special about Dave McKean that makes it feel real. I get the same thrill that I got 25 years ago seeing his covers."
The new cover appears in Entertainment Weekly along with the first interior page of Sandman: Overture #1 by J.H. Williams III, a design that is very intriguing in its own right, and though it doesn’t give away much of the story it does contain some images that will resonate with and whet the appetites of those who know the Sandman stories well. EW also made a mistake in its story by stating that Sandman: Overture was Gaiman’s first Morpheus story since 1996, an assertion that ignores the 2003 graphic novel Sandman: Endless Nights. But enough carping, it’s time to enjoy these great images.
