Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the most expensive Broadway musical in history, is closing in January and will re-open in Las Vegas in 2015, according to the Wall Street Journal. Ticket sales have been flagging, according to the report, although they were robust for many months since its June 2011 opening. The problem is the production’s high costs, which make the weekly nut unreachable without more than the $742,000 in ticket sales in a recent week.
The production was plagued with difficulties, including repeated injuries to performers during the show’s elaborate stunts (see “Where’s OSHA When You Need It Dept.: Another Spidey Broadway Casualty”); the firing of the show’s original director, and subsequent litigation, all detailed in a tell-all book (see “Tell-All Book Hints marvel Shaped Spidey Musical”).
Las Vegas may end up being a good home for the production, with casino economics making the high production costs more manageable and a constant flow of fun-seeking visitors to draw to the performances.
