This is the first major indication that the project is out of development hell, where it’s been since Brad Ingelsby was announced as screenwriter back in 2008 (see "Brad Ingelsby to Write 'Sleeper' Movie"). Apparently Shawn Ryan and David Wiener are now penning the adaptation. Ryan is known as the creator and showrunner for The Shield, while Wiener has written for AMC’s The Killing. They currently work together on ABC’s Last Resort.
Sleeper is based on a Wildstorm title, written by Ed Brubaker with art by Sean Philips, which ran from 2003 – 2005. The title was converted to Vertigo for the omnibus edition earlier this year; Wildstorm was shuttered in 2010 (see "Wildstorm RIP").
A sort of "Donnie Brasco with superheroes," the story follows Holden Carver, a deep cover operative in a noir world where a few people have spontaneously developed superpowers.
