Sony will release a Marvel movie centered around a female superhero in 2017, according to Deadline. The character has not yet been revealed, but will be drawn from a list that includes Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar and Spider-Woman, among others.
The 2017 date puts this new movie between Sinister Six, which was announced for November 11, 2016, and The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which will be released in 2018 (see "'Sinister Six' Spin-Off Boots 'ASM 3' to 2018").
The other Sony villain movie, Venom, has not yet been scheduled, but may also end up in 2017.
There’s been a fan call for a Marvel movie starring a female character for some time, but based on this report it now appears that Sony, which licenses the Spider-Man universe from Marvel, will beat Marvel (and Fox) to the punch. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told CBR, which asked when Marvel would produce a film with a female lead, "It can certainly be done. I hope we do it sooner rather than later. But we find ourselves in the very strange position of managing more franchises than most people have--which is a very, very good thing and we don't take for granted, but is a challenging thing."
