When Marvel Animation showed a clip of a Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, most industry observers, including ICv2, predicted that a Marvel Guardians cartoon series would be heading to Disney’s XD network (see "Marvel to Produce 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Animated Series"). Marvel Animation’s Stephen Wacker quickly denied that a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series was under serious consideration, saying that they had just decided to show some test footage that one of their animators had been working on, which has to be one of the lamest corporate denials of the past year.
Now, according to The New York Times, it appears that Marvel Animation is indeed prepping a GOTG cartoon series that will debut on Disney XD in 2015. As expected the GOTG cartoon will feature virtually the same cast that populated James Gunn’s hit live-action movie, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, and of course Thanos, who will play the series’ resident super-villain.
As for Marvel Animation’s Stephen Wacker--well now he’s telling the Times that the new GOTG series will "strive to replicate the movie’s offbeat sense of humor" with "a plot that will pick up where the movie left off."
