Tokyopop has announced that actress Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) and writer Dan Gordon (Wyatt Earp) are working with production company Hartbreak Films to bring a live action film version of the manga Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School to the silver screen. Tokyopop has published the 6-volume Real Bout High School manga series by Reiji Saiga and Sora Inoue as well as a four-DVD anime adaptation produced in 2001 by Gonzo.
In a press release accompanying the announcement screenwriter Dan Gordon characterized the project as 'a delicious action/comedy mix of Clueless meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.' Melissa Joan Hart's character Ryoko is the reincarnation of an ancient samurai warrior and mankind's only hope when it comes to destroying a coven of murderous wolverines that are hatched every 5,000 years. Tokyopop and Hartbreak Films are currently looking for potential studio partners for the project.
