Comedy continued to rule the weekend box office charts with the majority of moviegoers sucking on The Pacifier starring Vin Diesel, which took the top spot with an estimated total of $30.2 million.  After accelerating to the front ranks of contemporary action stars in The Fast and the Furious and XXX, Diesel apparently hit a career-stalling pothole when he failed to make a hit out of last summer's The Chronicles of Riddick, but his comedic, fish-out-of-water turn as a special forces tough guy assigned to guard a suburban family triumphed this weekend drawing a young (47% under 18) and predominantly female (55%) audience.  The older crowd headed for John Travolta's gangster comedy Be Cool, the sequel to Get Shorty, which garnered an estimated $23.5 million and came in second.  Be Cool attracted an audience that was more equally divided along gender lines (52% female) and considerably older (54% over 25) than The Pacifier's.

Meanwhile, working against the comedic trend as it has had to since it opened, the DC Comics-based Constantine dropped 50% in its third weekend of release as it fell to number six, earning an estimated $6 million and bringing its domestic cumulative to $60.5 million.  While it appears that the film will have a tough time making back its $100 million cost domestically, its overseas total has been running ahead of its domestic gross, which along with revenue from its DVD release should eventually make the film profitable and ensure at least one sequel.
