Jim Schifeling of Acme Comics in Normal, Illinois saw Buddy Saunders'  response to Steve Bennett's column on comics content (see 'Buddy Saunders of Lone Star on Comics Content'), and responds:

 

Buddy Saunders said in his comment, 'The world is not so nearly dark and depressing and 'complex' as many comics make it out to be.'

 

I think one look around will dispel that notion.  Comic books and all pop culture are a reflection of society and can only be a product of the times they are manufactured in.  I believe you have the causal link between audience taste and the nature of comics confused.
