Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired the film rights to the boardgame Risk from Hasbro, according to Variety.

Hasbro has been aggressively peddling its game properties to Hollywood; it’s already got Ouija (see “Lost Scribes on Board for Ouija”) and Battleship in development as the first in a six-picture deal with Universal (see “Monopoly, Magic Movies on Tap?”).

As the game-to-film path is a relatively new development (although there has been a Clue movie), it will be interesting to see how the films relate back to the core IP, and whether movies based on games will actually stimulate game play.
