
Under the working title The Princes of Catan, designer Klaus Teuber has begun work on a new, modular style version of the smaller sibling of the Catan line. Originally conceived as a two player variant for the widely popular The Settlers of Catan, the Catan Card Game has never enjoyed the sales or critical success of the larger board game.
But Teuber has always had faith in the card game version of his flagship title, and has been developing a new version that will be more accessible to new players. Not wanting to alienate fans of the more complex game, he envisions a modular, expandable system of “Theme Games” offering greater levels of complexity and strategic play.
The basic game will feature a reduced card pool without aggressive action cards, and will be set in the earliest phases of the Catan back story. Three Theme Games are planned, each of which will add more rules, more cards, and more strategic options. Each Theme Game will advance the Catan story line through different eras of history.
Currently scheduled for release in September 2010, The Princes of Catan will feature graphic design by Michael Menzel (Shogun, The Pillars of the Earth, Thurn and Taxis). It will be released by Mayfair Games in the
