Game sales in the hobby channel continued to grow in Q2 of 2011, according to a report in the recently released ICv2's Internal Correspondence #76, although not at the same pace as Q1, when words like "spectacular" were widely used to describe the market.
Mass sales improved relative to Q1, with a revitalized Pokemon driving sales in that channel.
Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering continues to do very well, with the Commander release, based on the fan-created Elder Dragon Highlander format, selling well in both hobby and mass channels. Redakai launched to better than expected results, with TV just kicking in now. Yu-Gi-Oh! and HeroClix continue to sell out in the hobby. World of Warcraft TCG is flat to up.
Board games had a quiet quarter, with the big three, Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, and Carcassonne still on top. WotC is starting to make a move in this category with its games set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe.
As we did for Q1, we separated out the card games, where Dominion remains on top, and Munchkin #2. Fantasy Flight Games' media tie-ins, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, both sold well but were hampered by short supply.
Games Workshop's new resin line, Finecast, has also been selling out. Privateer Press is putting new releases on hiatus to catch up on manufacturing backlist items.
In the RPG category, we estimate that Paizo's Pathfinder won the quarter, behind more and stronger releases than Dungeons & Dragons.
