Most of the titles on the Top 20 Unit Sales chart were the first and second volumes of the series, indicating that readers are still discovering them. The DC manga Joker: One Operation Joker also made the Top 20, along with the first volume of the venerable classic Akira. The Junji Ito volumes are all self-contained, and it’s impressive that five of them made the unit-sales chart. The 2022 chart showed a similar pattern but with more Chainsaw Man; sales of that series seem to have calmed down a bit, with four volumes in the top 20 compared to seven in 2022 (see "Full Year 2022: Top Manga Titles").
The dollar sales chart reflect the heftier price tag of Dark Horse Comics’ deluxe editions of Berserk, as well as Ito’s hardcovers, and the popularity of box sets with Shonen Jump fans. Still, it’s worth noting that the less expensive paperback version of Berserk also made both charts, showing that fans have a strong appetite for that story no matter what format it is presented in.
These are unit and dollar sales rankings based on sales tracked at point-of-sale by the ComicHub system at stores selling American comics around the world. During the period for which these reports were generated, there were over 125 stores using the ComicHub system. As this is a small, non-random sample of over 3,000 stores selling American comics worldwide, these rankings may not be typical for all stores, but do represent a variety of locations and store emphases.
This set of data was collected based on calendar year 2023. These sales rankings represent sales to consumers by comic stores during the period.
