George Lopez will voice the title role and produce a CGI-live action feature starring Warners animated character Speedy Gonzales for New Line, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The character, which was featured in an Oscar-winning animated short in its debut in 1955, has been criticized in recent years as playing on a racist view of Latinos.  The new film will be a more modern take on the character, with Lopez and his production company providing a “Latino seal of approval,” Anne Lopez told THR.

The script is being written by Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen, who also co-wrote Toy Story, Garfield:  A Tale of Two Kitties, and others.
