Dr. Frankenstein and his monster will be updated to current times in a two-hour pilot and four episodes in an 'event series' tentatively scheduled to begin this fall on the USA Network, according to Variety.

Martin Scorsese will team up with Dean Koontz, whose thrillers have sold more than 300 million copies, and producer Tony (24 and Felicity) Krantz to exec produce the project, which will be directed by Marcus (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) Nispel.   Koontz is also writing the series.

The series won't receive a formal greenlight from USA until after production begins on the pilot movie in mid-April, with casting starting next week.

Set in modern-day Seattle, the series will feature the original Frankenstein monster teaming up with the police against Dr. Frankenstein, alive for 200 years due to his genetic tinkering, and his small army of genetic freaks.

Although new licensed products may spring up later this year to accompany the series pilot and launch, retailers can also sell existing Frankenstein figures (see 'Details Revealed -- Jakks' Monster Figures' and 'Sideshow Gets Van Helsing License').
