The Entertainment Merchants Association's annual report indicates that mega-retailers Wal-Mart and Target dominated sales of DVDs, accounting for over 43% of the entire market.  Consumer electronics chains (think Best Buy, Circuit City) are responsible for 16% of the total, while online retailers have upped their share to 12.5%.  Other outlets including independent retailers, book stores, C-stores, grocery stores and discount chains account for the other 28% of sales.

The EMA estimates that the total market for DVD sales in the U.S. in 2006 was $23 billion, which is a somewhat smaller figure than the $24.2 billion number released by the Digital Entertainment Group in January.  But DVD sales still dwarf box office sales ($9.8 billion in 2006) and all forms of movies on demand, whether via cable, satellite or Internet download, which only amount to $982 million.

As for video rentals, Blockbuster dominates with 43%, while other video stores account for 39% and online rental services (NetFlix etc.) have 16% of the business.
