WisCon, a "feminist science fiction convention" held annually in Madison, Wisconsin, has rescinded its Guest of Honor invitation to science fiction author Elizabeth Moon for the May 2011 show due to a 9/11 blog post she made on the topic of “Citizenship" which included remarks on plans for an Islamic community center in lower Manhattan. Organizers originally expressed their objections to the post but planned to continue the appearance as planned, but changed their minds last week and communicated the change in plans to Moon.
Feelings are obviously running hot on the topic of Muslims in America across the board. The notice from the WisCon convention organizers appeared the same day as Juan Williams was fired from NPR after remarks he made on Fox News.
And in the comics space, attacks were recently mounted on the TV show based on the comic The 99, led by Fox sister company the New York Post (see “Debut of ‘The 99’ Delayed”).
