Lionsgate has announced that Oscar-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones is joining the cast of Red 2, the sequel to the film based on the Warren Ellis-penned comic book series Red about a group of "retired" CIA "dark ops" officers, which earned over $200 million at the box office and was the #1 home entertainment rental film of 2011. Also joining the cast of Red 2 is Byung-Hun Lee, the talented Korean actor who plays Storm Shadow in the G.I. Joe movies.
Dean Parisot, who helmed the incredibly funny and underrated Star Trek parody Galaxy Quest, will direct Red 2, with shooting set to get underway as soon as casting is complete. Erich and Jon Hoeber, who adapted Ellis’s comic the first time around, have penned a sequel that will be set and photographed in Europe. Jones and Lee will join returning cast members Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, and Dame Helen Mirren in Red 2, which is slated to be released next summer in August of 2013.
