Robert Redford, the founder of the Sundance Movie Festival and the Godfather of American independent cinema, is in talks for a role in Joe and Anthony Russo’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The typically authoritative Deadline site is reporting the news that comes as a shock to many, though considering the talents that Marvel Studios has been able to attract for it films, such as nabbing Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley to play The Mandarin in Iron Man 3, it is clear that any "stigma" attached to appearing in a comic book movie appears to be dissipating quickly.
According to Deadline, Redford "is in talks to play a senior leadership role in S.H.I.E.L.D." in the Winter Soldier adaptation, which is slated for release in a little over one year from today (April 4th, 2014). Given the interconnected nature of Marvel’s movies, it is altogether possible that, if Redford does indeed sign on for the second Captain America film, he could appear in subsequent Marvel films including Joss Whedon’s Avengers 2.
