The number of films tied to geek culture has expanded rapidly in recent years, accounting for a bigger and bigger percentage of Hollywood releases.  "Best in Shows" is the ICv2 list of geek films, arranged by quarter, with some context for each.  Dates and other information are updated until release with new info as we get it.  To see all the periods we’re covering, see the "Best in Shows Index".

Sherlock Gnomes
January 12
Paramount Animation and MGM will co-produce this animated sequel  to Gnomeo and Juliet. Johnny Depp will voice the title character, with James McAvoy and Emily Blunt returning to the voice roles of Gnomeo and Juliet.

Black Panther
February 16
Chadwick Boseman will play title role of T’Challa (see “'Black Panther,' 'Captain Marvel,' 'Inhumans' Movies”), and John Robert Cole is currently in talks to direct (see “John Robert Cole in Talks to Write 'Black Panther' Film”). Marvel announced a new comic series for the character to begin in 2016 (see “'NY Times' Bestselling Author to Write Ongoing 'Black Panther' Series”).

A Wrinkle in Time
March 9
Disney Studios claimed this date for a live-action fairy tail feature in 2016. A Wrinkle in Time is based on the children's book by Madeleine L'Engle.

Tomb Raider
March 16
Warner Bros. and MGM have announced this date for the Tomb Raider reboot. Alicia Vikander will star as Lara Croft (see “Another Academy Award WInner to Play Lara Croft”). The Tomb Raider franchise has sold over 45 million copies worldwide. Paramount’s two films, which starred Angelina Jolie, were released in 2001 and 2003. Together they grossed $432 million worldwide. 

Pacific Rim Uprising
March 23
Universal Pictures announced this date for the sequel to the 2013 blockbuster. Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega is set to star as Idris Elba’s son.  Steven S. DeKnight will direct. Expect a lot of merchandise for this film, as the first included a comic book prequel and HeroClix figurines. 

Ready Player One
March 30
While there isn’t any direct merchandising yet associates with the novel-based film, expect there to be many geeky tie-ins closer to the release date.
