Irish Actor Emmett Scanlan, who had a relatively minor role in Guardians of the Galaxy as the head riot guard, has been cast as Jim Corrigan in the NBC TV series Constantine, which is based on the DC/Vertigo Hellblazer comic book. According to IGN, Corrigan will be a recurring character on the Constantine series, and will serve "as a way of opening up DC’s occult universe."
There are three characters in the DCU named Jim Corrigan. The first, who was created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily in 1940, was a deceased cop who acted as a host to the cosmic entity known as The Spectre. The second was an African American policeman, created by John Albano and Jose Delbo, who debuted in Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #149 in 1972, and later became a regular supporting character in Black Lightning. The third Jim Corrigan is a crooked cop created by Greg Rucka, Ed Brubaker, and Michael Lark, who first appeared in Gotham Central #12.
The Jim Corrigan from the new Constantine series is a New Orleans homicide detective, who is "obsessed with justice" and doesn’t let any procedural formalities get in the way of his obsession--a trait that makes this character appear to be closest to the original Jim Corrigan/The Spectre. So don’t be surprised if The Spectre shows up on Constantine or even if The Spectre eventually gets his own TV series.
Jim Corrigan is just the latest DCU character to make his way into the Constantine cast. Just a couple of weeks ago NBC announced that actor Michael James Shaw would be playing "Papa Midnite" (see "TV's 'Constantine' Gets Its Papa Midnite").
