The Oscar-nominated animated short film The Dam Keeper will be adapted into a series of graphic novels from First Second, Entertainment Weekly reported. The 18-minute short film is also being adapted into a feature-length film, according to /Film.
The Dam Keeper was produced by Tonko House, co-founded by former Pixar art directors Robert Kondo and Daisuke Tsutsumi. The short film tells the story of an orphan named Pig, who has the lonely mission of keeping his town’s dam running to keep the black cloud at bay. The graphic novels will be sequels to the short film, which will explore the world beyond the dam. The first graphic novel, due in 2016, will begin five years after the film, with Pig and his friend Fox exploring the world beyond the dam when the dark cloud recedes for the first time. The book will explore how friendships evolve as people mature.
Details for the second Dam Keeper sequel were not announced. The report also stated that Tonko House will produce a third, unannounced graphic novel for First Second as well.
There were no specific details about Tonko House’s plans for the feature film adaptation.
