Marvel has announced a Secret Wars licensing program, the first time it’s created a merch line around a publishing event. Licensees include Mad Engine and Bioworld for apparel, Funko for figures, and Cardinal for puzzles, indicating that at least some products are probably headed for larger retailers. Diamond is creating apparel and drinkware, with special assortments and displays for comic stores.
While this is the first full-blown merch program for a Marvel event, Marvel has long integrated some licensed game products into its editorial events. The first we can remember is the HeroClix Civil War events (see "'HeroClix Civil War' Events") back in the mid-00s. For Secret Wars, Upper Deck has a Marvel Legendary product planned (see "'Secret Wars' Joins 'Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game'").
